Channel 4 Moors Murders What happened to Myra Hindley and Ian Brady
A new documentary exploring never-previously-seen prison letters will air tonight

A new Channel 4 documentary on Myra Hindley and Ian Brady will air tonight.

Moors Murders is a three part series that will explore the story behind two of Britain's most notorious serial killers.

Hindley and Brady tortured and murdered five children between 1963 and 1965 - and the programme will show never-previously-seen prison letters between the killers.

Pauline Reade, John Kilbride, Lesley Ann Downey and Edward Evans were buried on Saddleworth Moor in the south Pennines - and the killers never revealed where they buried the body of youngster Keith Bennett, who vanished in 1964.

The Moors Murderers were caught after Hindley's brother-in-law, David Smith, reported them to the police as he was a witness to their final murder.

Brady and Hindley were charged with three murders - and received life sentences in prison. The investigation was reopened when Brady confessed to two more murders.

Hindley made several appeals against her life sentence, but was never released and died in 2002 from bronchial pneumonia.

Brady was diagnosed as a psychopath in 1985 and was transferred to the high security Ashworth hospital.

The killer started a legal bid to be transferred to a mainstream prison so he could starve himself to death - and had to be force fed after going on hunger strike.

He died aged 79 in 2017 from natural causes - and his lawyer told the ECHO he was "very weak, but still articulate" just before his death.

Robin Makin was the executor of the killer’s will - and was one of the last people to see Brady alive.

The solicitor told the ECHO that Brady had “looked and spoke like a man who was about to die.”

The solicitor said: “We discussed a few things but he was extremely weak and it was very difficult for him.

“It was somebody who was in his last hours.

“He wanted to make sure that his legal and preparatory wishes were going to be fulfilled by me.”

Mr Makin wouldn’t be drawn on whether Brady expressed any remorse or regret for his crimes - or what his last requests were.

Moors Murders airs tonight at 9pm on Channel 4
