New Zealand v India: Crazy run outs of Martin Guptill, Jimmy Neesham cost Black Caps
Two soft run outs proved costly as the Black Caps collapsed in the middle of the first innings of the second one-day international against India.
Martin Guptill had been heading towards his first ODI century in more than a year and was trying to give Ross Taylor a single off the bowling of Ravindra Jadeja when he took off.
But the throw from Shardul Thakur hit the stumps directly, and Guptill carried on running all the way to the dressing room, dismissed for 79 off 79 balls.
The Black Caps had been 157-2 and headed towards a total of 300-plus before that ball in the 30th over, but by the time Mark Chapman departed eight overs later, they had slumped to 187-7.
Jimmy Neesham was run out in similar fashion to Guptill, taking off for a run after Taylor cut the ball behind point.
This time it was Jadeja that pounced, hitting the stumps directly with his left-arm throw, and the all-rounder was gone for 3 off 5.
In between, Jadeja had got Tom Latham LBW for 7 off 14, while Colin de Grandhomme (5 off 8) and Mark Chapman (1 off 2) followed after offering up simple catches.
Taylor finished not out on 73 off 74 as the Black Caps made 273-8 from their 50 overs.
Debutant seamer Kyle Jamieson made an unbeaten 25 off 24, including a pair of sixes, sharing in an unbroken 67-run stand for the ninth wicket.
Earlier, Henry Nicholls made 41 and Tom Blundell 22 alongside Guptill at the top of the order.
The Black Caps have a 1-0 lead in the series after winning in Hamilton on Wednesday, with the final match in Mount Maunganui on Tuesday.
