Norwich will be looking for a third consecutive victory when they welcome Wolves to Carrow Road on Saturday.

Daniel Farke’s last act as the manager of the Canaries was to oversee a 2-1 win at Brentford before the November international break. That was not enough to save the German’s job, but it arguably made the position more attractive to Dean Smith. The former Aston Villa boss was able to build on that triumph in west London with another in East Anglia, as Norwich came from behind to beat Southampton last time out.

As a result of those back-to-back victories, Norwich are off the foot of the table and beginning to feel a little more optimistic about their chances of avoiding an immediate return to the Championship. The gap separating them from 17th place now stands at just three points, although the fact that Norwich have both the worst attacking and defensive records in the division shows the magnitude of the task in front of them.

Wolves arrive at Carrow Road having won five of their last seven games in the Premier League. Bruno Lage has made them more expansive in possession without sacrificing the team’s defensive solidity, as evidenced by the fact Wolves have the best defensive record outside the top three. Just four points adrift of the Champions League places, this has been a fine start to the season for Wolves.

Norwich will have to make do without Sam Byram and Christoph Zimmerman on Saturday. Smith could name the same starting XI as last week, with Billy Gilmour almost certain to start after finding game time hard to come by under Farke.

Wolves will be unable to call upon the services of Jonny Otto, Pedro Neto, Hugo Bueno and Yerson Mosquera. Fernando Marcal is available again but looks set to continue as Rayan Ait-Nouri’s back-up at left wing-back, but Leander Dendoncker could come into the midfield.
