NVIDIA releases RTX Remix 0.4 open beta, classic games remasters made easier
NVIDIA RTX Remix Open Beta now available
The remastering tool can add higher resolution textures, ray tracing and even path tracing.
NVIDIA has been actively promoting its RTX Remix technology, a collection of tools that are intended to empower modders and game developers in classic game remastering. This tool enables modders and individual gamers to employ AI to generate new textures, integrate new assets, and even add support for features like DLSS, Reflex, and ray tracing.
The Remix modding platform focuses on remastering DirectX 8 and Direct 9 games, consisting of two key applications: The Remix Application (Toolkit) and Runtime. The Toolkit helps with game relighting, texture enhancement, and the adding of new game assets, while the Runtime captures scenes from games for modding purposes.

The company is working with modders to enable RTX technologies in games such as Half Life 2 RTX: An RTX Remix Project, which is a community remaster attempt. But the tool will also work for games like Call of Duty 2, Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, Garry’s Mod, Freedom Fighters, Need for Speed Underground 2, and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines.
NVIDIA RTX Runtime has a dedicated page on ModDB, where users can report if the game is playable with Remix configuration already, or it needs more work. Chances are there are modders already working on adding RTX features to your favorite games, so make sure to check it out.

The just released NVIDIA RTX Remix 0.4 is available for download today as an open beta. It introduces an updated DXVK implementation, which addresses capture-related issues, geometry corruption, stability concerns, and more. This version also brings improvements, such as enhanced performance in terrain baking, refined parallax occlusion mapping, improved anti-culling for in-game lights, and various other enhancements, notes Phoronix.
If you want to give RTX Remix a try as a modder, first you should check the requirements. The minimum hardware recommendation is an RTX 3060 Ti, while an RTX 4070 is recommended for optimal performance. NVIDIA has published a lot of materials, including documentation, video tutorials and even has an active Discord community for the Remix project.
NVIDIA RTX Remix 0.4 beta requirements | |||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Level | Operating System | CPU | CPU Cores | RAM | GPU | VRAM | Disk |
Minimum | Windows 10/11 | Intel I7 or AMD Ryzen | 4 | 16 GB | GeForce RTX 3060Ti | 8 GB | 512 GB SSD |
Recommended | Windows 10/11 | Intel I7 or AMD Ryzen | 8 | 32 GB | GeForce RTX 4070 | 12 GB | 512 GB M.2 SSD |
The RTX Remix is definitely a great idea, but it has one major problem. Modders cannot release full game remasters with all NVIDIA technologies already included due to various copyright issues. Instead, the idea relies on gamers adding these mods manually. Maybe in the future, when the database of Remix mods extends to a certain point, NVIDIA will add these profiles into their software to make ‘remixing’ easier.
