Jamie Carragher says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 'has been given more time at Manchester United' than other managers have at their respective clubs.

Manchester United have only won one of their last four games under Solskjaer and have suffered devastating defeats to Leicester, Liverpool and Manchester City.

Carragher says Solskjaer is not being 'judged solely on the quality of his work' and that the club have stuck with the Norwegian manager because of his 'emotional attachment' with the fans.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Carragher reflected on how former players done when transitioning into managerial roles.

He touched upon Mikel Arteta's impact at Arsenal and Frank Lampard's role at Chelsea before discussing Solskjaer's position at Manchester United.

He said: 'There will be those who will argue Arteta should be included in the group alongside Lampard, Pirlo and Solskjaer as a notable ex-player struggling to prove he is an elite coach at the club he played for.

'There have been occasions when he has seemed under intense pressure and a couple of games from losing the faith, if not of his board, certainly the Arsenal fans.

'But I have never seen Arteta in quite the same way as those others. Yes, he is a former Arsenal player, but with respect not a legend in the same way as the other three were to Chelsea, United and Juventus.

'To me, when Arteta was offered the Arsenal job his connection to the club was secondary to him being mentored by Guardiola at Manchester City.

'First and foremost, he is seen as a modern coach who understands how the game is evolving rather than someone steeped in the Arsenal tradition.

'That is more important than any emotional attachment to a former player because Arteta is constantly being judged solely on the quality of his work as opposed to Solskjaer who – and I mean this with the greatest respect – has been given more time than others would have been given results and performances because he is loved so much by the supporters.'

As it stands, the Old Trafford hierarchy have resisted calls to sack Solskjaer - who spent part of the international break at home in Norway.

However, the pressure will be on Solskjaer as he heads into a key period that will decide United’s European fate and include league fixtures against Chelsea and Arsenal.

Solskjaer will be desperate to get his team back on track at Watford on Saturday after a run of six defeats in 12 games including humiliations at the hands of Liverpool and City.

Another defeat at Vicarage Road on Saturday or in Tuesday’s Champions League group tie at Villarreal would pile more pressure on the under-fire boss.
