I took a gamble on a John Lewis pallet for 120 and bagged a 450 Playstation 5
Katherine Chalmers secured her John Lewis returns pallet for £120, including delivery, after putting in a bid online and it contained a PlayStation 5 console - but not all is as it seems

A woman has told how she “hit the jackpot” after bagging a PlayStation 5 and other products in a £120 John Lewis returns pallet.

Return pallets are boxes that contain goods that have been sent back to a company.

They’re often sold cheap in auctions - although the buyer is normally unable to see what is inside the pallet, which means you never really know what you’re buying.

If you strike lucky, you could end up bagging a returns pallet for cheap with goods worth thousands of pounds inside.

In some cases, there is nothing wrong with the returned items - sometimes the buyer has just simply changed their mind.

But sometimes, the items can have minor scratches or defects, or can be completely broken.

Katherine Chalmers secured her John Lewis returns pallet for £120, including delivery, after putting in a bid online.

As well as receiving a PlayStation 5 console, which alone costs around £450, she also bagged five bean bags, a mug, curtain poles, wool, a dog bed, a mirror, a soap dispenser and a bath caddy.

Katherine wrote in a TikTok video: “We put a bid for a random pallet of ex-John Lewis goods.

“It’s a blind auction so we didn’t know what would be in the box. We paid £120 including delivery. This is pallet arrival day.”

Katherine explained to her TikTok users that her and her boyfriend used the auction website BidSpotter to purchase the returns pallet.

Sadly, she confirmed in a follow up video that the PS5 turned out to be broken in what she described as the "reality" of these auctions - but Katherine says they will try to get it fixed.

She didn’t say what was wrong with the console but it is hoped it'll cost less to fix than what its face value is worth.

She wrote: “They tested it, it stopped working. So it is broken. We will try to get it fixed.”

However, people were still impressed at the pallet, with one saying: “Omg how lucky.”

Returns pallets can be a gamble - but we've also reported on some pretty impressive success stories.

For example, one woman says she bagged over £5,000 worth of products from John Lewis after purchasing one.

Emily Canham said her impressive haul included a £2,000 Sage Oracle Touch coffee machine and a £450 Dyson Airwrap.

She also managed to get a GHD Smoothing Hot Brush, which retails at £139, and five new vacuum cleaners ranging from a £179.99 cordless Vax to a £679 Miele cordless cleaner.
