DWP will now pay up to 800 a month to 3 million people after April change
Changes to the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) rates came in earlier this month

Around three million people who claim Personal Independence Payment (PIP) from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) can now get up to £800 per month after payments were increased this month.

Earlier this month, PIP benefit payments were increased in line with the 6.7 per cent inflation rate. PIP is a benefit designed for individuals who need extra help with daily tasks or mobility due to long-term illnesses, disabilities, or physical or mental health conditions.

The DWP has listed common conditions that people claim PIP for, including psychiatric conditions like anxiety, depressive and mood disorders, as well as musculoskeletal, neurological, or respiratory diseases such as asthma and cystic fibrosis, the Express reports.

PIP is made up of two components: a daily living part for individuals requiring help with everyday tasks, and a mobility part for those needing assistance with getting around. Each component has two rates: a standard rate and an enhanced rate.

Whether claimants receive one or both parts depends on how challenging they find certain tasks. People can apply even if they're working, have savings, or are already receiving other benefits.

New PIP rates for 2024

The new standard and enhanced payment rates that have come into effect this month are as follows:.

Daily living tasks

  • Standard rate - £72.65 (up from £68.10 a week)
  • Enhanced rate - £108.55 (up from £101.75 a week)

Mobility tasks

  • Standard rate - £28.70 (up from £26.90 a week)
  • Enhanced rate - £75.75 (up from £71 a week)

The increased rate of the mobility component also provides individuals with the choice of obtaining a Motability vehicle instead of cash. The alterations imply that those eligible for the full rate can now receive up to £184.30 weekly, which equates to approximately £798.63 monthly.

PIP is typically paid every four weeks. To determine how much of the payment an individual is entitled to, the DWP will carry out a PIP test, which involves rating certain tasks with a score based on how much their condition affects it.
