Petition calling for another general election nears 1 million signatures
A petition calling for another general election is approaching the one million mark.
Under UK petition rules, any petition receiving more than 100,000 signatures is considered for debate in Parliament, and those surpassing 10,000 signatures receive a government response.
The petition was created by Michael Westwood, who has expressed concerns about the Labour Government’s performance since the general election on 4 July.
It alleges that the government has not kept promises made during the election campaign. Specific criticisms include the removal of the Winter Fuel Payment and the introduction of a new inheritance tax for farmers.
The petition’s popularity follows protests in Westminster this week against these policies. A response from the government is expected soon, and a debate date is likely to be set in Parliament in the near future.
The deadline for signatures is 20 May 2025.
