THE LOWDOWN
PETRA MARTIC
World number 79 Petra Martic beat Anna Bondar in straight sets on Wednesday to reach the second round. The 31-year-old was world number 14 as recently as 2020 but after a long time out of form she looks to be tentatively improving, with a victory over Madison Keys at the Monterrey Open last week a great result.
TAMARA ZIDANSEK
24-year-old Tamara Zidansek set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 22nd late last month despite not playing since a third round defeat to Alize Cornet at the Australian Open. The Slovenian won her first WTA title last season at the Lausanne Ladies Open on her favoured clay, with a surprise run to the semi-finals of Roland-Garros her stand-out achievement to date.
THE PREDICTION
This looks a tough call between Petra Martic nowhere near her best and Tamara Zidansek up to her career-high ranking but coming in cold. Especially as Martic has won both of their previous encounters in three sets at the Istanbul Open on clay and the US Open later that year. Two three-set encounters and Martic’s match practice suggests backing the Croat to win at least a set as the likelier victor is the sensible move here but this could go any which way.
