A spokesperson for the force said: “Police have declared a major incident in Plymouth after a suspect WW2 ordnance was discovered in a garden. Officers were called just after 10.30am today to a property in St Michael Avenue.

“A 200m cordon has been put in place and officers are speaking to residents and assisting with the evacuation of properties within that cordon. The Royal Navy EOD are currently at the scene. People are advised to avoid the area where possible.”

The man who discovered the large suspected Second World War bomb in a back yard of a Keyham property has revealed how he initially spotted the mystery object "about a week ago".

The man, who we are not identifying, said he was helping dig out the rear yard of his daughter's home with a building, with the aim of preparing the ground for an extension.

He said he and the builder have been digging deeper and deeper to find hard ground and satisfy the wishes of a building inspector.

This incident is currently ongoing. Follow our live blog here for the latest updates and information.
