UEFA set to introduce major rule change for Leicester City VS Roma
Latest Leicester City news from LeicestershireLive as UEFA were planning on using the technology just for the final of the competition.

UEFA will ‘introduce’ the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for the Europa Conference League semi-finals, according to reports in Italy.

Leicester City made it to their first-ever European semi-final in the competition on Thursday night, late goals from James Maddison and Ricardo Pereira giving them a 2-1 win over Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven on what was a historic night for the club.

City entered the tournament after finishing third in their Europa League group. They have since overcome Danish side Randers, Ligue 1 Rennes and PSV over two legs to make it to the final four.

Brendan Rodgers will now come up against Jose Mourinho with the Portuguese manager bringing his AS Roma side to the King Power Stadium on April 28. City will travel to Italy a week later in the second leg of the semi-final.

Unlike in other UEFA competitions, so far in the Europa Conference League, VAR has not been in operation. But that could change at this stage.

According to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport , the system will be ‘introduced’ for both of the semi-finals. That means that it will be in operation for both legs between City and Roma as well as the other clash between Marseille and Feyenoord.

It was originally planned that VAR would only be used for the final, which will be played in Triana, Albania on May 25. It now seems that the plan has been brought forward with all four stadiums in operation able to use the system.

The Europa Conference League is the first time that City have played home games without the use of the technology since its introduction back in the summer of 2019. The only other games they’ve played without it have been cup games away at lower division sides.
