Airdrie sea shanty TikTok star scores two Official Top 40 singles with ‘Wellerman’

Airdrie postie and viral TikTok sensation Nathan Evans has scored two hit singles on the UK’s biggest chart show.

Nathan Evans’ ‘Wellerman’ is the brand new number 22 on The Offical Big Top 40, with ‘Wellerman’ (220 KID x Billen Ted Remix) going in at number 32, just two days after its release.

The Official Big Top 40 host Will Manning revealed that both tracks had entered the chart tonight, with Nathan's rendition of the traditional ‘Wellerman’ sea shanty, which took the world by storm on TikTok, the third highest new entry on this week’s chart.

The Official Big Top 40 is the UK’s biggest chart show with 1.4m listeners every week and the only chart that reflects UK consumption in real time.

Speaking exclusively to Glasgow Live earlier this week, Nathan revealed that his dreams of performing at TRNMST once live music returns after the pandemic and of collaborating with Lewis Capaldi.

He had been singing sea shanties on TikTok since July 2020, but it was his rendition of The Wellerman in December that went global - sparking a craze that has become a source of collaboration between other TikTokers.

Nathan’s performances even led to “sea shanties” enjoying their biggest-ever popularity in Google’s history.

And with Andrew Lloyd Webber among the celebrities to record themselves singing along with Nathan's sea shanty, the 26-year-old has hooked himself a contract with Polydor Records.
