Seatrium to Build Third Offshore Wind Project in Netherlands for TenneT | Offshore Wind

A consortium led by Seatrium and GE Vernova will be constructing its third offshore wind project in the Netherlands for Dutch transmission system operator (TSO) TenneT, with the construction work commencing on 1 June 2024.

In March 2023, Seatrium was awarded a five-year framework cooperation agreement with GE Vernova by TenneT for the supply three high-voltage direct current (HVDC) electrical transmission systems for offshore wind projects in the Netherlands.

Each project is valued at approximately EUR 2 billion, with a total combined capacity of 6 GW as part of TenneT’s offshore grid acceleration programme.

Seatrium’s scope of work will include the engineering, procurement, construction, transportation, installation, and commissioning of the 2 GW HVDC offshore converter platform for TenneT.

According to Seatrium, the platform will contribute to TenneT’s goal of installing 40 GW of offshore wind energy in the German and Dutch North Seas and will serve the NWBE (formerly named Nederwiek 2) offshore wind farm, located approximately 95 kilometres off the coast of the Netherlands.

Like the first two HVDC projects awarded to Seatrium last March, the company will work with its consortium partner, GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions. The contract award of NWBE is expected to be on 1 June 2024, after the completion of certain deliverables by both Seatrium and GE Vernova in the coming months.

“With this latest project, Seatrium is currently working on five HDVC offshore Converter Platforms, creating a franchise for series-built opportunities in HVDCs to achieve greater synergies from project repeatability,” said Samuel Wong, Executive Vice President, Fixed Platforms.

TenneT’s next-generation, 2 GW grid connections in the Netherlands are scheduled to be completed between 2028 and 2030.

The Netherlands aims to have 21 GW of operating offshore wind capacity by 2030, corresponding to around 75 per cent of the country’s current electricity consumption.
