Josh Windass sends heartfelt message to Sheffield Wednesday supporters after more playoff pain
Sheffield Wednesday have been condemned to another season in League One after a heart-breaking defeat to Sunderland in the play-offs.

Josh Windass has apologised to Sheffield Wednesday's long-suffering supporters after the Owls missed out on an instant return to the Championship. Wednesday were eliminated from the League One play-offs, losing 2-1 over two legs to Sunderland in the semi-finals of the end of season jamboree.

In front of nearly 33,000 fans at Hillsborough last night, Lee Gregory claimed his 17th goal of the season to level up the tie in the 74th minute. The match appeared to be heading to extra time but Patrick Roberts scored in added on time to condemn Wednesday to another season in the third tier. It is the third time in six years the Owls have lost in the play-offs.

Windass, preferred to Saido Berahino in attack, posted on his Twitter account: "Incredible support, incredible club. Sorry we came up short. Congratulations to Sunderland and good luck in the final, we’ll be back."

It has been an injury plagued campaign for Windass. The 28-year-old appeared 12 times across all competitions but only made three league starts, scoring four goals.

Captain Barry Bannan has also delivered his verdict on Wednesday's year on social media. "Where do I start last night; we come up short but I’m so proud of my team and staff that has been on this journey with me this season. We gave our all to the very end. Keep your heads up. The fans. Wow - best I’ve seen Hillsborough thanks again. Your amazing."

The club have also today sent a message to the fans. "A tough way for our season to end We’ll be back stronger and go again," Wednesday posted on Twitter. "Progress has been made on and off the pitch this season, fans class from the first whistle at Charlton on day one to full time last night in the play-offs. Busy summer ahead and on to 2022/23. WAWAW."
