Heung-min Son just gave South Korea the lead with a typically cool finish, as his country look to take a step closer to qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

Throughout this season for Tottenham, we’ve seen Heung-min Son take on the responsibility of captaincy and thrive in his role as the main attacking outlet for the Lilywhites.

Son has registered an impressive 14 goals and eight assists in the Premier League this year (Transfermarkt) and, with ten games to go, will be hoping to lead Spurs to a top-four finish and Champions League qualification.

His attention now, however, will be firmly on his duties to South Korea, as he captains the side through this international break.

Watch Sonny’s goal for South Korea

South Korea have a double header of World Cup qualifiers, with a home tie against Thailand today, and the reverse fixture being played on the 26th of March. And, thanks to Son, South Korea are off to a great start.

The Spurs skipper gave Korea the lead after 41 minutes, with Lee Jae-sung cutting the ball back to Son in the box, who applied one of his trademark smart, sweeping finishes with his left foot into the corner of the goal.

However, since the break, Thailand have equalised. Still, South Korea are on course to qualify from their group, barring any major disasters in the next three games.

That goal marks Son’s 45th for his country, in 123 appearances (Transfermarkt).

Spurs Web Opinion

How many times have we seen Son use this type of finish? He’s so calm and composed in the box, the way he just strokes the ball into the back of the net is a joy to behold. Hopefully, South Korea can push on and carve their path to the World Cup, so we can see Sonny on the big stage one more time.
