Is Spotify still down? What to do if you have been logged out after streaming app stopped working

Spotify went down on Tuesday evening, with thousands of people complaining on social media that they couldn’t access their accounts.

Discord experienced similar problems, with both outages linked to Google Cloud. Both Spotify and Discord are now back online.

Here’s what went wrong, and what to do if you’re still experiencing issues.

Spotify tweeted at 6.22pm on Tuesday alerting users that “something’s not quite right” and that it was looking into the problem.

Just over an hour later and it updated users again to say the issue had been fixed.

Spotify did not inform users what had caused the outage, but it appears to be linked to problems with Google Cloud, which Spotify and Discord both use.

An issue with an update to Google Cloud’s traffic director was believing to be at fault, before the company rolled it back to its previous version.

Google Cloud said: “The issue with traffic director has been confirmed to be caused by a recent release; the release has been rolled back and customers can now start using traffic director. We have identified a probable root cause and will be publishing an incident report within the next several days.”

The problem should now have been fixed, but you may be asked to log back into your account.
