Report: Liverpool stance on ‘exceptional’ player shared as Steven Gerrard eyes Aston Villa move
Liverpool have no plans to let defender Joe Gomez leave the club despite links with a move to join Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa.
That’s according to The Sunday Mirror (05/12, p71), who claim that Liverpool won’t allow Gomez to go in January.
It’s claimed that Gomez’s lack of playing time this season is down to Jurgen Klopp being ‘cautious’ about his injury return.
Liverpool sources suggest that there is ‘zero chance’ of Gomez being allowed to leave Anfield in January.
Liverpool were dealt a number of centre back injuries last season and were left in a real crisis.
Keen to avoid a similar situation, Liverpool won’t let Gomez – branded ‘exceptional’ by Klopp – leave for Aston Villa.
The Sunday Mirror reported last week that Steven Gerrard wants to take Gomez to Villa on loan.
Gerrard’s strong ties with Liverpool may have made a deal seem possible, but the Reds aren’t keen at all.
Gomez is behind Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate at Liverpool right now. Gomez’s England spot appears to be slipping away – a major concern ahead of the World Cup next year.
That leaves Gomez in a difficult spot; too good to let go, but not quite good enough to start for Liverpool right now.
If Gerrard wants Gomez, he may have to wait until next summer to bring him to Aston Villa.
