Reacting to the news of social media, Rob Burley, the former head of the BBC’s political programming, voiced his disapproval over the Government’s decision, citing it as a ploy to distract from the Prime Minister's recent political drama.

On Twitter, Mr Burley said: “Part of 'operation red meat' - distract from partygate by effectively cutting BBC funding again.

“This will mean services will have to be cut, staff in news and elsewhere will be lost, more mistakes will be made. Short-sighted doesn’t cover it.”

Earlier this year, Tim Davie, the BBC’s Director-General, outlined the BBC’s recent successes during the pandemic and put forward the argument for the UK continuing to have TV licence fees.
