TV Licence changes set to happen for first time in years – and it's really soon
Brits are warned of a major change to the BBC TV Licence set to happen within two weeks.
Even if you don't want to, you'll have to pay your BBC TV Licence for a raft of reasons. But not everyone has to pay for the licence.
In fact, there's a good few reasons and occasions which mean you don't need to cough up a single penny. However, millions still have to splurge more than £150 a year.

And the cost is about to increase for the first time in years. From the beginning of April 2024, the government will up the licence by 10%.

It means the annual cost will now rise from £159 to £169.50. This marks the first time the TV Licence has increased since 2021.
Owning a TV Licence is important if you watch live television as it's aired, whether that's BBC One, ITV1, or even live sport on Prime Video.
You'll also have to pay up if you recorded live TV, even if you're watching on catch-up. It's just the law so even iPlayer users face the annual fee.
But you wont have to pay for a TV Licence if all you watch is on-demand content that isn't on iPlayer. So if you stick to ITVX and Channel 4 on catch-up, you're okay.

The same goes for Netflix or Prime Video subscribers. You can also get refunded for your TV Licence if you have been paying and didn't actually need it.
So what happens if you should be paying for a TV Licence and you don't?
You could find yourself dragged to court. And the biggest fine you could get is £1,000, while in some cases can lead to a prison sentence.
TV Licensing explains that taking someone to court is the last resort after trying to teach those who aren't paying why they should cough up the fee.
