Tesco Clubcard price difference slammed as 'dreadful' and 'ridiculous'

Tesco Clubcard price difference slammed as dreadful and ridiculous
One shopper has slammed supermarket giant Tesco after noticing an "absolutely ridiculous" difference between the standard and Clubcard price for one of its products

Tesco has been criticised for the "dreadful" difference between the standard price and the Clubcard price of one product.

While the retailer's loyalty card is known for giving customers access to lower prices, one shopper noticed a "ridiculous" disparity for one item in particular.

Taking to Twitter, she expressed their outrage that the product was priced at £40 for most shoppers, but those with a Clubcard were only required to pay £16.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, she questioned why the supermarket was selling the item at such a high cost if they were able to offer it at a bargain price for people with the card.

She tweeted: "This is dreadful… if you can sell it at £16 then sell it at £16. The Clubcards are literally free of charge so what is the point?

"You don’t gain anything from Clubcards. £40 is absolutely ridiculous. Seeing these crazy prices more and more in Tesco, it really is shocking!"

Speaking to Bristol Live, a Tesco spokesperson said: "Through Clubcard Prices, we’re giving more than 20 million customers access to thousands of exclusive deals on everything from everyday staples like fruit and veg to treats like prosecco and ice-cream.

“It’s easy and free to sign up, and customers can register on the Tesco Grocery & Clubcard app, website or in store to start saving straight away.”

Tesco recently announced it was changing its Clubcard system for customers who routinely do their shopping online by scrapping paper copies of their quarterly Clubcard statement and vouchers and instead sending them electronically.

Those who have been sent an email about the shake-up and wish to continue getting their statement and vouchers by post will need to manually opt back in by signing into their MyClubcard account online, clicking on 'statement preferences' and changing it back to 'by post'.

If you change your preferences after 5 May, you'll receive your May statement and vouchers by email, but will then receive your August statement and vouchers by post.

The change follows the news that the supermarket will launch 59 new branches across the UK over the next 12 months.

Chief executive Ken Murphy said the latest opening programme will take it to a total of over 2,000 Express stores and 1,001 shops, stating: “Our priority is to be the most convenient retailer.

“That means serving customers wherever, whenever and however they want. No matter where our customers live, or how they shop.”

Up to 290,000 shop staff, along with call centre and warehouse workers, at Tesco will also get a bonus as a special "thank you" for their efforts over the past year, the retailer added.
