The Girl Before full cast list, locations and start time as new BBC drama airs

The Girl Before is a brand new BBC One drama starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Jessica Plummer.

Based on JP Delaney's 2018 bestseller of the same name, the four-part psychological thriller is set to be jam-packed with twists and turns.

The synopsis for the new series reads: "The Girl Before tells the story of Jane (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), who gets the chance to move into a beautiful, ultra-minimalist house designed by an enigmatic architect (David Oyelowo).

"There's just one catch: the occupants must abide by his list of exacting rules. Jane starts to feel the house changing her in unexpected ways, but when she makes the shocking discovery about her predecessor Emma (Jessica Plummer), she's forced to confront unnerving similarities. As the two women's timelines interweave, Jane begins to question if her fate will be the same as the girl before...

But when is the new BBC drama on television, who is in the star-studded cast list and where did filming take place? Here's everything you need to know.

The new series makes its debut on Sunday, December 19 at 9pm on BBC One.

A four-part series, the thriller will continue to air every night at the same time until Wednesday, December 22.

The new series has a star-studded cast list including Gugu Mbatha-Raw, David Oyelowo, Jessica Plummer and Ben Hardy.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays Jane Cavendish who is described as being "smart, curious, dogged, disciplined, and a natural perfectionist".

Jane moves into the "ultra-minimalist house" on One Folgate Street as the "the discipline required to live there chimes with her own work ethic and high standard".

Viewers will recognise Gugu from the Loki series on Disney as well as films such as Beyond the Lights and Belle.

Meanwhile David Oyelowo plays Edward Monkford, the architect that built the house and its rules. A description of his character reads: "A supremely self-confident and successful architect, Edward is so obsessively perfectionist that the slightest flaw in his surroundings causes him almost physical pain.

"His grief has manifested itself into the extreme minimalism present in his architecture and every other aspect of his life. Edward is completely ambiguous - is he dangerous, or merely damaged? A victim, or a killer? Whatever the truth, he's a tragic figure doomed to repeat the same cycle of behaviour over and over again, unable to move on from his past."

Emmy-nominee David rose to fame on the hugely successful BBC series Spookes and has starred in many big films such as Selma and more recently The Water Man.

Jessica Plummer plays Emma Matthews, the former resident of One Folgate Street.

Emma's tagline reads: "For her, One Folgate Street's stone walls represent security, safety and renewal. But Emma is hiding a dark secret and, living in the pressure cooker that is One Folgate Street, the truth will out in the end."

Jessica is known for her role on BBC's EastEnders and more recently her stint on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! in 2020.

Another EastEnders alumni Ben Hardy also stars in The Girl Before. He plays Jessica's partner Simon Wakefield. He is described as being "deeply insecure in his masculinity" with a fear of rejection.

Also starring in the series is Sex Education's Rakhee Thakrar as Mia, Franscesca Knight as Camilla and Lisa Faulkner as Tessa. Meanwhile David Mumeni plays Mark.

The production team for The Girl Before, which is produced for BBC One and HBO Max by award-winning company 42 (The English Game, Watership Down, The Courier), based operations at The Bottle Yard Studios in Bristol.

Bespoke interior sets were built at the Studios for One Folgate Street, the drama's main location.

Filming took place during April and May 2021.
