Olivia Colman (The Night Manager, The Crown) has already more than secured her reputation as one of the best drama actors the UK has ever produced.

But she is set to add to her credentials with the new Netflix film, The Lost Daughter.

The film marks Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut, which she adapted from Elena Ferrante’s novel of the same name.

Alongside Colman, the film will star Dakota Johnson, Jessie Buckley, Ed Harris, Peter Sarsgaard, Paul Mescal and Dagmara Dominczyk.

The Guardian review describes it as a “stylish feature debut from Maggie Gyllenhaal as writer-director, adapting a novel by Elena Ferrante: the result is an absorbingly shaped psychological drama, built around a single traumatising event from which the action metastasises.”

“It takes place partly in the present and also in the lead character’s remembered past, triggered by a calamity that she witnesses and in which she decides, insidiously, to participate.”

When is The Lost Daughter out on Netflix?

Netflix tells us that the film will hit the streaming platform on New Year’s Eve (December 31, 2021) at 8:00 AM GMT.

The film has also had a limited theatrical release and is in selected cinemas today (December 17, 2021).

What is The Lost Daughter about?

The harrowing drama sees Olivia Colman take on the role of a mother on holiday whose past is shrouded in mystery and intrigue.

Netflix's official synopsis says: “Alone on a seaside vacation, Leda (Olivia Colman) becomes consumed with a young mother and daughter as she watches them on the beach. Unnerved by their compelling relationship, (and their raucous and menacing extended family), Leda is overwhelmed by her own memories of the terror, confusion and intensity of early motherhood.

“An impulsive act shocks Leda into the strange and ominous world of her own mind, where she is forced to face the unconventional choices she made as a young mother and their consequences.”
