The Pentaverate ending explained as Ken and Reilly fight to save the world

The Pentaverate ending explained as Ken and Reilly fight to save the world
She was English all along!

The Pentaverate spoilers ahead.

Mike Myers' first major role in more than a decade has come to pass in the form of The Pentaverate – a secret-society Canadian conspiracy comedy. (Canconcom?)

Naturally, because Myers is Myers, he massively helps out with Netflix’s budget issues by not only writing the show, but also producing it and starring as eight different characters. You can’t accuse him of not being a multi-tasker.

The story sees Ken Scarborough (Myers), an aging Canadian journalist who, in a desperate bid to save his job, tries to track down and expose secret society The Pentaverate with the help of his young production aide Reilly (It’s A Sin’s Lydia West).

The group, active since 1347, consists of five powerful men who fake their own deaths in order to pull the world’s strings from a secret bunker. (But for the good of mankind!)

Turns out they’re pretty easy to track, as long as you know the right conspiracy theories who know the right people.

But messing with mysterious groups never runs smoothly, especially as the once-solid do-gooder group had been corrupted from within. They want to control society to line their pockets with billions, rather than help save the world.

So what exactly happened to Ken and Reilly as they dived headfirst into this uber-secret world?

Here’s how the story played out.

(Last call for avoiding major spoilers, please leave now or hold your peace).

How did The Pentaverate end?

In The Pentaverate’s final episode, all the drama heads towards The Meadows – a top tier conference with the world’s most powerful people in attendance. Pentaverate member Australian media mogul Bruce Baldwin (who is definitely not inspired by Rupert Murdoch) is due to give a speech.

The audience includes Queen Elizabeth, Paul McCartney, Oprah, Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Bill Gates and Dennis Rodman. Obviously.

After discovering Bruce (played by Myers) and Skip Cho (Ken Jeong) were the corrupt members of The Pentaverate, Ken gets a shock when he discovers Reilly is actually an undercover operative for the organisation and not, in fact, Canadian.

She was working with Lord Lordington (Myers again) and Patty (Debi Maza) and the Moustache Man (Neil Mullarkey) on a secret mission that required her to bring the well-meaning journalist into the fold.

Moustache Man saves them from kidnapping by Skip and Bruce, but they end up splitting up, with Ken ending up in an orgy room. (Forewarning: there are a lot of penises on show as he tries to blend in. Also hot dogs.)

Back at The Meadows, Bruce stands before the participants of the summit and announces he has solved climate change thanks to supercomputer Mentor – but the world is too stupid to deserve it.

In a meta commentary moment, he declares: “They’re so stupid that they give away their privacy online just to be mindlessly entertained. So stupid that they give their personal data just to have that data weaponized against them, and they don’t care. They don’t deserve the truth.”

Instead, he attempts to sell Mentor to the highest bidder. Most storm out – good on you, Your Maj – but a few remain, and the bids start in the trillions.

Once Ken and Reilly are reunited, they join the Liechtenstein guard to go head to head with the Red Robes to crash the conference and disrupt the auction. They’re later joined by conspiracy theorist Anthony Lansdowne (Myers again), who feels victorious at proving the Pentaverate exists, only to be beaten down by Bruce, who tells him that as a conspiracy theorist he was the easiest to manipulate because he’s so convinced there’s something stopping him succeeding, when in actual fact it’s just him.

Holding Reilly at gunpoint, Bruce sells Mentor to Vladimir Putin to the delight of Skip Cho. Ken is given the Pentaverate keys and told to turn them to trigger Mentor. He refuses and throws them out of the airborne put in the centre of the room. Soon Lansdowne takes his shot and throws himself out of the pit too, dragging Bruce along with him with one last cry of “but her e-mails”.

The remaining members of Pentaverate decide to destroy the group as it is not the positive force that it once was. As this happens, Mentor needs to reboot from scratch, but in order to do so it needs a pure soul. The pure soul in question is that of Ken Scarborough, which is the reason Reilly was given the mission to bring him to the Pentaverate.

Reilly is heartbroken to discover she essentially brought Ken as a sacrifice and begs him not to do it. However, Ken is revitalised, realising this is his true calling and the start of a new life for himself to change the world.

With the Pentaverate poisoning themselves to end their reign, it’s now up to Reilly and Patty to start a new, better organisation which is more inclusive, diverse and generally nicer.

But in the final seconds, it’s revealed Bruce survived the fall, and is now living on a tropical island after getting “face off surgery” to look like Rob Lowe.

The Pentaverate is available now to stream on Netflix.
