Where To Watch The Substance Starring Demi Moore
Hollywood legend Demi Moore has won her first ever Golden Globe for her performance in The Substance, a body horror movie that looks closely at beauty standards and body image, as well as the huge stigma women face by ageing.
Starring alongside Margaret Qualley, Moore plays Elisabeth, a middle-aged TV fitness instructor who gets “let go” from her onscreen job, essentially due to the fact that she's deemed too old. Soon she comes across a “substance” that will create a “better” version of her, enter Qualley's Sue. But Elisabeth discovers that there's a price to pay for this youthful gift, and it isn't pretty. The film is unflinching in its portrayal of the sexist underbelly of Hollywood, with Dennis Quaid playing Elisabeth's boss a undoubtable iteration of disgraced abuser and movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.
Demi opened up in an interview with GLAMOUR earlier this year about the empowering elements of making the movie, even though the shoot was pretty gruelling. “I feel like I walked away feeling very liberated,” she said. "In a way, going to those places that were not so attractive, that were not glamorous, was very freeing."
And now The Substance has gone down in awards season history for Demi. “I really wasn’t expecting that. I’m just in shock right now! I’ve been doing this a long, like over 45 years and this is the first time I’ve ever won anything as an actor. And I’m just so humbled and so grateful,” she said upon accepting her award at the Golden Globes.
Demi also reflected on a producer describing her as a “popcorn actress” 30 years ago, and how that impacted her and how she felt about her accomplishments. “And at that time I made that mean that this wasn’t something that I was allowed to have, that I could do movies that were successful, that made a lot of money. But that I couldn’t be acknowledged and I bought in and I believed that. And that corroded me over a time.”
