Tom Daley Is Back Knitting At the Paris Olympics. Here's Why

Tom Daley is showing off his impressive knitting skills at the Olympics once again.

On the first day of the Paris Olympics, the 30-year-old professional diver was seen knitting in the stands as he watched the women’s synchronized 3-meter springboard final on July 27.

The NBC Olympics TikTok account shared footage of the moment. In the clip, Daley, who holds four Olympic medals, shouts after a diving duo's performance, as he seemingly knits part of a Union Jack.

"TOM AND HIS KNITTING IS SO WHOLESOME," one person commented on the video.

"Omg I'm so excited to see what he makes this year," another fan wrote.

"I wonder if he's making a Paris cardigan...!?!?!" a third said.

In pictures taken of Daley at the event, he's seen holding up a red, white and blue knitted sweater that said Daley on one side.

Daley first went viral for his knitting hobby at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. The diver was spotting stitching in the stands and cheering on his teammates at the same time.

Why is Tom Daley knitting?

In a 2022 interview with TODAY, Daley explained his fascination with knitting and said he likes to do it as a way to relieve stress.

After training for five years for the Tokyo Olympics, he said his newfound hobby helped “save” him from overthinking.

“When you train for four years — in this case it was five because of the pandemic — you get one chance, six dives,” he said.

However, knitting was the "superpower" he needed to help bring home the gold.

“We weren’t allowed to go out, we weren’t allowed to do anything, to socialize, and there was so much time to overthink about things,” he said. “So, I ended up doing that all the time to get out of my own head. It was my meditation, it’s my calm.”

In 2022, Daley released a knitting and crochet guide book titled "Made with Love," featuring 30 patterns.

Daley is returning for his fifth Olympic Games to compete at the Paris Olympics.

On July 29, he'll be taking part in the 10-meter synchronized platform dive alongside Noah Williams.

The event arrives after he acted as Great Britain's flagbearer at the Games' opening ceremony on July 26.
