Here are Alasdair's thoughts on that first half from Spurs

Spurs began the game with real verve, fired up by a noisy Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

They were duly ahead within nine minutes as Matt Doherty won the ball down the right and played in Harry Kane. He surged towards the six-yard box and fired in a low cross that Kurt Zouma could only turn into his own net.

It was 2-0 on 24 minutes as Kane's glorious low ball found Son Heung-min's run and he turned inside and hit a shot that deflectd off Zouma's leg and past Lukasz Fabianski.

However, Tottenham gave the visitors a fingerhold back in the match before half-time with another poor display of set piece defending.

First Matt Doherty stumbled and let the ball roll out for a corner. Then from the flag kick, no Tottenham player was marking Said Benrahma and Son realised too late that he had to switch players and by then the Algerian had volleyed past Hugo Lloris, who will have felt he should have done better.

There was some good performances for Spurs, not least Rodrigo Bentancur who ran much of the midfield play, including a driven ball to Kane that started the move for Tottenham's second goal.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has also been a battling presence alongside him while up front Harry Kane has been a creative force, Dejan Kulusevski looks confident and Son is a willing runner to stretch the Hammers backline.

However, Tottenham need to remain vigilent at the back, particularly from set pieces and they will hope that West Ham will tire in the second half after their Thursday night exploits.
