Chelsea spent on eight January deadline day transfers as 713m splashed in one day
Chelsea have often dipped into the market several times on January transfer deadline day over the years, but they've never spent more than in one window under Carlo Ancelotti

Chelsea have been among the biggest spenders in the Premier League for a number of years, and that spending includes a healthy number of mid-season moves.

This month has seen them bring in Dylan Williams from Derby County, though there has been a lot more attention on the future of some of their current squad members amid uncertainty over a number of contracts set to expire over the summer.

The Blues have forked out more than £100m on January deadline day signings alone, with eight players passing through the gates at Stamford Bridge on the final day of the winter transfer window.

Here, Mirror Football has taken a look back at all eight of the signings, including one day on which the Blues forked out an eye-watering £71.3m on two new signings.

Ricardo Quaresma - 2009

Luiz Felipe Scolari brought Quaresma to Stamford Bridge on loan in 2009, having worked with the winger during his time in charge of the Portugal national team.

The winger joined from Inter Milan, where he had struggled to hold down a place under Jose Mourinho, and was thrown straight into the starting line-up for the weekend's game against Hull City.

Unfortunately for Quaresma, that game was also Scolari's last in chance, with the Brazilian dismissed days after the goalless draw.

Quaresma played just four more games under interim manager Guus Hiddink, all of them from the bench, and returned to Inter at the end of the season.

Fernando Torres - 2011

Liverpool striker Torres had scored both goals against Chelsea in Scolari's final defeat at the helm, and the Spaniard's record in the Premier League prompted the Blues to fork out £50m to sign him in January 2011.

The £50m fee was a British transfer record at the time, and Chelsea would not end up spending more on a new signing until Alvaro Morata arrived from Real Madrid in 2017.

"I’m really happy. I’m taking a big step forward in my career. It’s a big club with a big mentality, the kind of team I like to play for," Torres said upon signing.

“They are one of the biggest clubs in Europe, always fighting for trophies.

“I’ve always wanted to play for one of the top clubs in Europe and now I am.”

Unfortunately for the former Atletico Madrid man, a difficult first few months set the tone for his time in London.

Torres took 15 games to score his first goal for the Blues, and never scored 10 league goals for the club in a single season, eventually leaving in 2015 without a Premier League title to his name.

He did at least play a part in the Champions League and Europa League wins, but his time at the club will go down as a disappointment.

David Luiz - 2011

The same day Chelsea brought Torres to west London, they completed a slightly more low-key move for David Luiz.

At the time, Luiz was only just establishing himself as a Brazil international, but Chelsea were still prepared to fork out £21.3m to Benfica while allowing Nemanja Matic to move in the opposite direction.

"I am delighted to be joining a big English club," Luiz said.

"It is a major challenge for me but I am determined and confident in my ability to adapt to this excellent league, and I look forward to meeting my new team-mates."

The South American won two European trophies in his first spell with the club, converting one of the Blues' penalties in the 2012 Champions League final victory.

After leaving for Paris Saint-Germain in 2014, he returned two years later under Antonio Conte and added a first Premier League title of his career.

Patrick Bamford - 2012

2012 was the year in which Chelsea picked up two young talents who would go on to impress in the Premier League - just not for the Blues.

Bamford was 18 years old when he completed a move from Nottingham Forest for a seven-figure fee, having made his senior debut for the Championship club a few months earlier.

He had caught the eye in the FA Youth Cup, scoring five and setting up another three as Forest's youngsters beat Wigan Athletic, but the striker never really got much of a chance at Stamford Bridge.

Bamford was loaned out in each of the next five seasons, eventually leaving Chelsea permanently in January 2017 without playing a single competitive game for the club.

Five years on from that, though, and he's finally shown his Premier League pedigree for Leeds United.

Kevin De Bruyne - 2012

Like Bamford, De Bruyne was signed with a big reputation but never really got a fair crack of the whip at Chelsea.

Also like Bamford, he went on to establish himself in the Premier League, albeit much more quickly and much more spectacularly.

Manager Andre Villas-Boas admitted the Belgian was a club signing, rather than one he was behind himself, saying "In the sense that it's the club policy for the future, it's the right thing [to buy him] and I'll do everything in my power for him to reach maximum potential."

"A club has to look to the future, whether it's with this manager or another. He's a good bet for the future," Villas-Boas said.

De Bruyne was immediately loaned back to former club Genk, and by the time he returned the Blues had replaced Villas-Boas with Roberto di Matteo.

The midfielder only ended up playing a handful of games for Chelsea after his £6.7m move, but has been significantly more successful at Manchester City.

Kurt Zouma - 2014

The first January deadline day signing of Jose Mourinho's second Chelsea stint saw Kurt Zouma, at the time a highly-rated teenager, join the club from Saint-Etienne.

"If we don't do it now, probably we can't do it in the summer because other clubs were also very strong on him," Mourinho said after clinching the £12.5m deal, with Zouma rejoining the French club on loan for the remainder of the season.

"So we did it, now he stays at St Etienne, pre-season he will join us. We will see if it is to stay or if it is to go on loan."

Zouma was brought into the first team set-up the following season, earning a Premier League winner's medal for his contributions, but a serious injury in February 2016 set his progress back and he needed two loan stints to rediscover some Premier League form.

The France international returned to the fold under Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel, and Chelsea more than doubled their money when they eventually sold him to West Ham United over the summer.

Chelsea's form in the 2014-15 season meant any January arrival would find it hard to break into the team, and so it proved with Cuadrado.

The Colombian joined for £23.3m from Fiorentina after developing into one of Serie A's most in-demand players, with the Serie A side's manager Vincenzo Montella saying "I'm happy for him because he is going to a big club."

"I am very happy and thankful for this opportunity I've been given," Cuadrado said upon sealing the move.

"This is a great club and honestly it is like a dream to join the Chelsea family and to know that the manager believes in me. I'm happy."

He played 14 games under Mourinho as Chelsea won the league, and once more at the start of the following season, before joining Juventus in a loan move which developed into an eventual permanent switch.

Not only did the deal fail to work out, though, but the signing of Cuadrado saw Chelsea send Mohamed Salah in the opposite direction on the first of his two loan spells before eventually selling the Egyptian in 2016.

Olivier Giroud - 2018

Antonio Conte's final transfer window at Chelsea was a curious one.

The Blues got Diego Costa off their books, selling the Spaniard back to Atletico Madrid, and spent some of the money to add Emerson Palmieri and Ross Barkley to their ranks.

There was one more deal left to do, though, and it saw Olivier Giroud move to Stamford Bridge in what also proved to be one of Arsene Wenger's final sales as Arsenal manager.

"Chelsea is one of the biggest teams in the Premier League. They have won maybe the most trophies in the last six or seven years," the Frenchman said.

"It’s a massive club and I am proud to sign for Chelsea, and I’m looking forward to playing."

While Giroud was rarely a regular starter for Chelsea in the league, he was a dynamo in Europe across his three-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge.

He netted 17 times in 26 games across the Champions League and Europa League, including 11 in the 2018-19 season as the Blues beat his former side to be crowned Europa League champions.
