The Quarry was originally Until Dawn 2 until a falling out with Sony
Despite a remaster being on the way there’s never been an Until Dawn 2 and, as many suspected, that’s because of behind the scenes turmoil.
2015’s Until Dawn was a surprise hit for Sony, an interactive horror movie unlike any of their other first party exclusives, that played less like Resident Evil and more like a choose your own adventure story.
Despite two VR spin-offs there’s never been a sequel though, which is strange. Especially as developer Supermassive Games went on to make the very similar, but multiformat, The Dark Picture Anthology.
It’s long been assumed that Supermassive had some sort of falling out with Sony and now new sources claim that’s exactly what happened, with 2022’s The Quarry allegedly starting life as Until Dawn 2.
According to former Supermassive employees, Sony paid for the creation of an Until Dawn 2 prototype but when that was completed Supermassive attempted to shop the concept around to other publishers.
Naturally, that angered Sony and also meant that there could be no formal connection with the Until Dawn series, which is when it was renamed The Quarry and Goggle took over funding – when it was still pushing the Stadia streaming service.
The explanation comes from an article on Time Extension, but a different ex-employees claims that while The Quarry had started life as Until Dawn 2, Sony refused to be involved because they were upset that The Dark Pictures was multiformat.
Since neither Sony nor Supermassive have commented on the situation publicly there’s no way to know which version of the story is true, although both sources agree that The Quarry was originally intended to be Until Dawn 2.
The Quarry did always seem an unusual release, as there was no obvious reason why it wasn’t just part of The Dark Pictures series, since the concepts are so similar, but if the origins are as suggested then that would explain things.
A remaster of Until Dawn was officially announced at the State of Play showcase on Wednesday night, but it is by new studio Ballistic Moon, with no mention of Supermassive.
Sony is also planning a movie adaptation, so they clearly want to continue the series, which in turn means there’s likely to be an official Until Dawn 2 at some point.

Robert Henrysson, former CEO and chairman of Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios, will take over as CEO of Supermassive, so perhaps he’ll be able to repair the developer’s relationship with Sony and maybe even work on Until Dawn 2.
Considering how much they have in development at the moment though that might not be logistically possible, with Light Nightmares 3 and Dead By Daylight spin-off The Casting Of Frank Stone due out this year and the sci-fi themed Directive 8020 planned as the next Dark Pictures game.
