Virgil Abloh And Wife Shannon: The Childhood Love Story Of The Chicago Couple

Bertrand Rindoff Petroff
Virgil Abloh, Louis Vuitton artistic director and founder of the Off-White fashion label, has passed away following a private battle with cancer.
On Sunday, November 28 the luxury French fashion cooperation LVMH shared the news of Abloh’s death from cardiac angiosarcoma - a rare form of heart cancer – two years after his diagnosis.
‘He chose to endure his battle privately since his diagnosis in 2019, undergoing numerous challenging treatments, all while helming several significant institutions that span fashion, art and culture,’ an excerpt of the statement read.
The designer is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife, Shannon (née Sundberg), and their two children, Grey and Lowe. A post on Abloh’s Instagram page describes him as a ‘fiercely devoted father, husband, son, brother, and friend’.

Despite his high-profile career, dressing the likes of the Hadid sisters and collaborations with Kanye West and Hailey Bieber, little has been known of Abloh’s private life and marriage.
Abloh and his wife, a programme manager at Monster, married at the Four Seasons hotel in Chicago, Illinois in 2009 following a childhood romance.
The pair met at senior school before moving to Wisconsin for higher education. Shannon studied management and marketing at Edgewood College, while her future husband focussed on civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin before studying for a Master of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he found his passion for fashion design.

According to Inside Weddings the pair married after a 10-year courtship and a surprise proposal. Abloh reportedly proposed to his partner at the airport after he asked her to drop him off before a work trip.
As they said their goodbyes Shannon jumped out of the car to take the driver’s seat from her boyfriend where she found him waiting for her on one knee. ‘I was completely surprised – I couldn’t believe it!’ Shannon recalled to the publication.

Recalling her partner’s wedding speech she told Inside Weddings: ‘His words were so heartfelt and sincere. He had everyone laughing, crying, and then smiling… it’s the one moment I was dying to see on our wedding video.’
The designer added: ‘The stress and strain never outweighed their good-natured hearts. More than anything, this was what created the most special evening of our lives, and we are so thankful.’

For their wedding day Shannon wore an ivory-hued Amsale dress and aubergine-toned Christian Louboutin heels to coordinate with the colour of her bridesmaids’ dresses, while the designer wore a black tuxedo with a white bow tie.
Our thoughts are with Abloh's family during this time.
