Willie Limond dead aged 45 as Scottish boxing mourns legendary fighter who thrilled fans

Revered fighter Willie Limond has died at the age of 45 – plunging Scottish boxing into mourning.

Limond was found unresponsive in his car after suffering a suspected seizure on Saturday, April 6 and has now sadly passed away. Former fighters, pundits and fans rallied around the stricken star who thrilled onlookers during a career to treasure. Limond boasted a record of 42-6 during a professional career which spanned 24 years.

The Glaswegian was an easy pugilist to root for with his combative style thrilling fight fans. And his storied career saw him capture Commonwealth titles in two weight classes, while also landing the British light-welterweight crown and causing Amir Khan a mammoth fright during their enthralling clash back in 2007. Limond was the ultimate fighter and he shared the ring with fellow Scots fight stars Alex Arthur and Ricky Burns during his fight career. And he even travelled to Mexico to take on the legendary Erik Morales back in 2010.

Limond enjoyed a career which few could imagine when lacing up the gloves for the first time and his sterling efforts inside the squared circle earned him acclaim. His last contest was against Burns last September in Glasgow.

The fight hero had been due to take on Joe Laws next month with Limond in training before the tragic events. A statement from St Andrew's Sporting Club read: "Everyone at St Andrew’s Sporting Club are shocked and deeply saddened at the loss of our friend, Willie Limond. Willie was not only a legend of the sport, but an infectious character who will be greatly missed by us all."
