Met Office wind warning for Teesside with potential 80mph gusts
Forecasters have issued a yellow alert for high winds for Middlesbrough, Stockton, Redcar and Cleveland, and Hartlepool

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for Teesside and the North East of England - with coastal gusts of up to 80mph.

Forecasters say gales will hit our patch around 10pm today - Sunday, January 26 - in Middlesbrough, Stockton, Redcar and Cleveland, and Hartlepool. The warning lasts until 7am Monday, January 27.

A statement from the Met Office reads: "A brief spell of strong winds, moving northeastwards from the south coast from Sunday evening, may lead to some disruption."

They say Teessiders can expect:

  • Some delays to journeys by road and rail, with bridge restrictions or closures possible.
  • A slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs
  • A small chance that injuries could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties
  • A slight chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • A small chance that some high-sided vehicles may be blown over, which would lead to longer journey times which could extend into tomorrow's rush hour should this occur.

The unwelcome news comes two days after Storm Eowyn left a trail of damage on Teesside and the rest of the North East, with lorries toppled, school closed, a car crushed and destruction to buildings. Hundreds of properties were left without power, with residents in Long Newton being sent a food truck by Northern Powergrid.

A generator was also drafted in, which managed to get power back to half the village before it was fully restored around 5.45am today.

Northern Powergrid says it is still working to reconnect all customers, but some may not be until early next week. The firm says: "Unfortunately, there are further strong winds forecast later today which may impact our ability to work at height, where overhead repairs are required. As we continue to assess damage, we are providing our best view of when we can restore power.

"Currently, if your restoration time says 23:00 today, we’re still assessing or progressing the work required. We will update customers as soon as we know a more accurate timeframe. We hope to restore power to most customers today.

"We're updating the power cut map regularly, with more accurate estimated times as soon as we are able. The map gives the same information that is available to our contact centre advisors. If you haven't already, please report your power cut online, it helps us to keep you updated and provide direct updates.

"We're sorry some customers may be without power for an extended period of time, and we want you to know we're here to support you, 24/7. If you are in a dangerous situation, there is risk to life, you are medically dependent on electricity, or you require extra support, call us on 105. If you have a medical emergency, call 999 immediately."
