'I'm a GP - if you have any of these five blood cancer symptoms go see your doctor'

Leukaemia, cancer of the white blood cells, is the 12th most common cancer in the UK, with around 9,900 new cases in the UK every year.

But like all cancers, spotting symptoms early is important to ensure the best chance for successful treatment.

Dr Asif Ahmed, a UK-based GP and co-founder of Doxtor, shared five symptoms of blood cancer to see a doctor about on his TikTok channel.

1. Unexplained or persistent infections

2. You're always tired or have a fever for no obvious reason or cause

3. Skin changes - again for no reason, such as your skin being more pale than usual or small pin prick-like red dots appearing on your body.

4. Generalised lymphadenopathy - such as lumps in your armpit neck or groin

5. An enlarged liver or spleen or persistent unexplained unusual bleeding

Dr Ahmed said: "These are non-specific symptoms hence why leukaemia is often missed.

"So if you have any of these, please go and see your doctor, where you need to have an examination done and some blood tests."

Acute leukaemia means the cancer progresses quickly and aggressively, and treatment will usually thin a few days after a diagnosis has been confirmed.
