Zara McDermott says her relationship with boyfriend Sam Thompson has been made stronger by going through the biggest test – living in a tiny flat while renovating their dream home.

The couple, who began dating in May 2019, have purchased their first home together but have decided to rebuild it from scratch to suit both their tastes.

It means they’ve had to downsize and, for now, are currently living in a tiny studio apartment – a living situation that’s enough to make even the strongest of couples crumble.

Opening up to Metro.co.uk, Zara – who has just released her new BBC documentary Uncovering Rape Culture – said: ‘Right now, we are currently building our dream home together. So I think naturally life will progress how life naturally progresses.

‘For now we’re just focusing on building our dream home and that’s a massive step in your relationship, doing a whole house renovation together and sometimes disagreeing on things.’

So how small is their temporary living arrangement? Zara laughed as she revealed it’s around two steps from the sofa to the kitchen and everything is in one tiny room.

The former Love Island star continued: ‘Living in this tiny confined space together – and actually we’ve been living like this for six months – has been a genuinely massive test for our relationship and at first, I thought we were gonna bite each other’s heads off, but actually it’s been fine and I think that shows that we’ve got so strong in our relationship.

‘I’m so lucky to have him and he’s been such a massive support for everything I’m doing and all the films I’ve been making, it’s so lovely to have a partner who is so supportive.’

Zara, 24, has just debuted her second BBC Three documentary, Zara McDermott: Uncovering Rape Culture, which sees her investigate the rampant rape culture among young people in schools.

Made In Chelsea star Sam, 29, makes a brief appearance in the film and Zara couldn’t be more grateful to have him involved offering a different perspective.

‘He’s in the film with me as well and he really brings a different energy to the film and adds so much value in such a short space of time. It’s so great having him with me on my new journey,’ she said.

‘It’s so lovely to be in the same industry because you always understand what each other are dealing with. I couldn’t be with someone who’s not in the same industry because it’s always nice to connect on that level.

‘Getting his advice, I actually really look up to him because he’s achieved a lot,’ she added.

Zara McDermott: Uncovering Rape Culture is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
