'Fire' on train brings Taunton to Bristol line to standstill - live updated - Bristol Live
Elliott was on the CrossCountry train with the issue this morning, and explained what happened on board.
He said: "I was on the 6:25 bound for Newcastle. I got on at Exeter St Davids. So around 7:10 ish maybe 7:15 there was a loud bang and scrapping noise, the train slowed and stopped. The engine clearly turned off.
"From what we were told by the on-board team, and from what I overheard by National Rail guys at Worle Station nobody knows what the object was."
Elliott was late for work as a result: "Very very late for work of course, but I'm lucky that I've got a team that I was in contact with informing them of whats happening. I was headed to Bristol Temple Meads.
"We got in after changing trains at Worle about 9:10. I understand that the GWR train that picked us up was themselves 70+ minutes late.
"But the customer service from the onboard staff at CrossCountry was great, we got free bottles of water and the Manager kept talking to us as well. Great service."
He wrote in a later tweet: "My train hit what has been described as an 'unknown object'. After a few hours of being stationary, weve been moved to another train. Absolute top work by National Rail, CrossCountry and GWR for their customer service."
