Scoot Takes Delivery Of First Embraer E190-E2

Scoot Takes Delivery Of First Embraer E190E2
Singapore's low-cost carrier Scoot received its first Embraer E190-E2 jet in Brazil and it will soon be flying regional routes in Asia-Pacific.

Summary

  • Scoot makes history as the first Singaporean airline to receive an Embraer E190-E2 regional jet for its growing network.
  • The CEO expresses gratitude for Azorra and Embraer's support, showcasing confidence in E2's role in Scoot's network growth strategy.
  • The E190-E2's exceptional short runway performance and fuel efficiency position it as an ideal aircraft for expanding regional connectivity in Asia-Pacific.

Aviation history was made in Brazil on Thursday when Embraer handed over the keys to a new E190-E2 regional jet to low-cost carrier Scoot, marking the first delivery of an Embraer aircraft to a Singaporean airline. Aircraft lessor Azzora is providing the jet to Scoot, and all three parties got together at Embraer's headquarters in São José dos Campos for the official handover on April 11.

A first for Scoot

Scoot's decision to introduce the E190-E2 was first announced in February 2023, and the airline will receive nine via a leasing agreement with Azzora, with the aircraft coming from Azorra's existing orders with Embraer. The E2s will complement Scoot's existing fleet of Airbus A320 Family and Boeing 787 Dreamliners and will be used on regional routes from Singapore.

At the handover, Scoot CEO Leslie Thng thanked Azorra and Embraer for supporting the airline in its next chapter as it becomes the first major operator of the E2 in Southeast Asia, adding:

"We are honored to be the first Singapore carrier to take delivery of this modern and fuel-efficient aircraft and the E190-E2 jets are crucial to our overall network growth strategy. The delivery of the first Embraer E190-E2 reflects our confidence in the demand for air travel and our commitment to connect our customers to more destinations at the same great value."

The new jet has been named 'Explorer 3.0' in celebration of the third and newest addition to the Scoot family and is due to enter service in May with an inaugural flight from Singapore Changi Airport to Krabi in Thailand.

A world of possibilities for the E190-E2

At last year's Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) conference in Singapore, Thng told Simple Flying that the E190-E2s would be flying regional routes from Singapore to smaller destinations when it made more sense for Scoot to fly those rather than its parent, Singapore Airlines.

The E2 brings some exceptional performance aspects to the region, including its ability to handle steep approaches, as it does at London City Airport in the UK, and the capability to land on short runways. The E190-E2 demonstrated its short runway performance in South Korea when it landed over a runway distance of 1,066 (3,497 feet) with 80 passengers onboard and enough fuel for an onward flight to Seoul.

Embraer said the E190-E2 was the only narrowbody aircraft that could access a 1,200-meter runway (3,937 feet) in all conditions, and its exceptional short runway performance will enhance regional connectivity. The new-generation aircraft is the perfect choice for launching and building new routes, particularly to second-tier cities that may not initially have sufficient demand for larger narrowbody jets like the A320 or Boeing 737.

With its lower fuel burn and reduced emissions, the E190-E2 can profitably open the thinner routes that abound throughout Asia-Pacific and can then be operated by its A320s or 787s when the demand builds. Since its launch in 2012, Scoot has carried more than 82 million passengers and currently flies to 67 destinations across 15 countries and territories in Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Europe.

Will the E190-E2 succeed in Asia-Pacific? Let us know in the comments.
