Major Glasgow Tesco store set to shut permanently after making losses

A MAJOR Glasgow Tesco Extra store is set to be shut down permanently after making losses.

It emerged that the supermarket firm’s east end Parkhead branch is set to close amid claims negotiations with landlords collapsed.

The business is understood to have been negotiating a smaller floorspace within the premises, but no agreement was reached.

It’s not yet known how many jobs would be lost if the shop were to close for good.

The worrying news for staff was tweeted by Labour Glasgow MSP Paul Sweeney.

He assured employees that he would be assisting with any further discussions over the planned closure.

Mr Sweeney tweeted: “More bad news for Glasgow's East End today as @Tesco announce the closure of their Parkhead store in a year's time due to it being loss making.

“Tesco have attempted to negotiate a smaller floorspace but the landlord won't agree. I have offered my assistance in these discussions.”

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We have taken the difficult decision to serve notice on the lease of Glasgow Parkhead Forge Extra.

"We realise this will be unsettling for our colleagues and customers.

"We remain in conversations with the landlord to explore alternative options which will allow us to continue to serve the local community.”
