Fitbit is recalling over a million of their Ionic smartwatches due to a potential burn risk from overheating.

The Google-owned fitness tracker has been forced to recall the Ionic smartwatches after they revealed the battery can overheat, posing a burn hazard. Fitbit's Ionic style smartwatch was launched in 2017 but the company ended production on this style in 2020.

The recall means thousands of Brits may be at risk to the smartwatch overheating and Fitbit, who are based in San Francisco, is urging users to stop using the watch immediately.

Anyone who bought the $299 (£225) watch with the model number FB503 should immediately stop using the product and contact Fitbit for packaging to return it. Customers will receive a full refund and a discount of 40% to purchase certain Fitbit products, the company said.

Fitbit's consumer notice said: "Fitbit, in conjunction with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), announced a voluntary recall of Fitbit Ionic smartwatches, which the company introduced in 2017 and stopped producing in 2020. The battery in the Ionic smartwatch can overheat, posing a burn hazard.

"The health and safety of Fitbit users is our highest priority. We are taking this action out of an abundance of caution for our users. We will offer a refund to Fitbit Ionic customers.

"This voluntary recall is specific to Fitbit Ionic devices. It does not impact any other Fitbit smartwatches or trackers. If you own a Fitbit Ionic, please stop using your device."

The recall doesn't affect any other Fitbit smartwatches. There are a number of deals available across various retailers in the UK for Fitbit smartwatches. Argos has this Inspire 2 model which comes in three colours for just £89.

Meanwhile, Boots has the Versa 3 or £199 as well as promotional offers on Fitbit smartwatches which include £35 off when using code FIT35 on selected models, or FIT10 for £10 off on others. Currys also has £60 off selected Fitbit smartwatches and John Lewis have Fitbit watches for children that start from just £69.
