National Savings & Investments (NS&I) announced the winning numbers for its Premium Bonds December draw, where two bond holders became millionaires having won £1m each.

How do NS&I Premium Bonds work?

Premium Bonds, offered by National Savings & Investments (NS&I), operate as a lottery where each bond purchased is assigned a unique number that is entered into a monthly draw for cash prizes, cites an article in The Star.

Unlike traditional savings accounts, Premium Bonds do not earn interest, and there is no gambling involved. Instead, the person's money remains secure, potentially for years, and they have the chance to win prizes ranging from £25 to £1,000,000 every month.

Premium Bonds has been running since 1957 and uses a system called ERNIE (Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment) to choose its winners.

An individual's money is always safe in a bond, as it is backed by the UK Government’s treasury.

How to participate in the NS&I Premium Bonds draw?

To participate, an individual needs to purchase Premium Bonds, with a minimum investment of £25 and a maximum of £50,000. Bonds can be bought online through NS&I’s website or by post using an application form and a valid cheque.

You can purchase a Premium Bond online on NS&I’s website. Alternatively, you can buy bonds by post by sending a completed application form with a valid cheque.

To check if you have won, you can visit the NS&I website every month.

Who were the December winners?

The NS&I had over 5.8 million prizes in its December draw with a total prize fund of more than £441m.

The first £1m prize was one from a Kent resident, who holds £50,000 in Premium Bonds. The winning bond number was 405PY086681, and was purchased in July 2020 for £49,950.

The second millionaire hails from Cumbria. The person invested £33,275 in Premium Bonds. Their winning bond, 538KR930303, was bought in April 2023, valued at £10,000.

Additionally, 94 winners received the second prize of £100,000. One £50,000 prize was also awarded to an individual with just £370 in Premium Bonds.

The NS&I said that since its first draw in June 1957, ERNIE has drawn 731 million prizes with a total value of £34.1bn.

The full list of winners can be found on NS&I’s website.
